Maryanne Walker , Master of Science, Conservation and Ecology

Maryanne’s research helps us understand hedgehogs.

After completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Conservation and Ecology, Maryanne Walker had an exciting project lined up for her: researching the diet of the European hedgehog.

Hedgehogs are a major pest here, but endangered in the UK. Knowing what’s in their diet helps us identify which New Zealand native plants they feed on, and how their diet could be supported in their homeland.

As part of her Master of Science, Conservation and Ecology, Maryanne successfully used a new technique to produce hedgehog dietary samples. She also engaged the local community and council groups about the importance of her research and raising pest awareness.

She is now studying a PhD in Conservation and Ecology looking at the habitats and movement of the green gecko.
