Yukiko Wadamori, Master of Science

Lincoln graduate Yukiko has sunk her teeth into a new career after formerly studying dentistry.

Originally from Japan she graduated with a Master of Science degree and is now a research associate at Plant and Food Research.

She chose to come to Lincoln to change her course of study.
“Lincoln University allowed me to study postgraduate even though I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Dentistry.

“I studied Food Toxicology, Food Microbiology, Food Biochemistry, Food Technology and Engineering, Food Nutrition, and Research project in the first year.

“In my research project I selected the theme from Food Biochemistry and published a paper based on this project. During summer time I did a scholarship with ANZCO foods and experienced food processing and development, sensory evaluation, statistics and wrote a report.

"Then I did a Food Microbiology thesis in the second year of my Master’s degree, with an eye on the number of jobs available around food safety."

However, finding work has not been a problem.

She did an internship with Harrington’s Brewery after she finished her degree.

“During the internship, my supervisor introduced me to Tegel’s microbiology laboratory and I got a nine weeks contract.

“Three days before I finished my contract one of my colleagues decided to leave Tegel and I got permanent job. I worked there for 10 months in total before I got my current job.

“They (Plant and Food Research) were interested in my both backgrounds (dentistry and food science) as well as my experience at Tegel lab and at ANZCO (mostly sensory evaluation)."

Her study translated directly into the role.
