17 February 2021 | Students News

Alumnus Hugh Abbiss took out the Lincoln University-backed ‘Food Strainer’ section of the East Coast FMG Young Farmer of the year competition last weekend.

The farm manager from Tikokino came third, while the overall prize and a trip to this year’s grand final went to Joseph Watts.

Hugh has a Bachelor of Commerce (Agriculture) degree, and is in charge of two staff and 900ha of sheep breeding and finishing, cattle finishing and a range of cash crops.

He has also spent time working on sheep and beef farms around the country.

This is Hugh’s third regional final.

Teams from Rathkeal College claimed first and second in the junior competition, and the Ruahine School ‘Crazy Chickens” took the top spot in Agrikids primary school section.

This weekend’s Northern FMG Young Farmer of the Year Regional Final event has been postponed due to the latest COVID-19 restrictions.

Lincoln University is an overall sponsor of Young Farmers, which offers an ideal opportunity for New Zealand’s emerging talent to shine.
