Horticulture is one of New Zealand’s most vibrant and successful industries. But in order to keep pace with change and growing demand, qualified and experienced leaders are needed across the sector.
The Diploma in Horticulture Business is a flexible 12-month online study programme that complements your knowledge of horticulture production and other food-related businesses with business skills.
This can open doors to other roles including strategic management, consultancy and sustainable growing.
How you’ll grow
- Learn how biological, economic and social disciplines create value chains relating to horticultural production and global agribusiness.
- Understand how theoretical concepts underpin the operation and management of horticultural operations.
- Understand the complex technical, economic and social aspects of global horticulture.
- Learn how to implement competitive marketing strategies and plans across food market systems and agribusiness.
- Nurture your ability to evaluate, analyse and solve problems as they relate to agribusiness, real-world horticultural production and marketing.

Programme Structure
The Diploma in Horticultural Business is a flexible online programme that can be studied full-time or part-time.
The full-time version is an eight-course diploma taught across four terms. Two courses are delivered each term.
Term 1: HORT 108 and MKTG 104 Monday 5 Feb to Friday 12 April
Term 2: MGMT 107 and MKTG 103 Monday 22 April to Thursday 27 June
Term 3: MKTG 105 and MKTG 106 Monday 8 July to Friday 13 September
Term 4: MGMT 108 and MGMT 109 Monday 23 September to Friday 29 November
There are three compulsory face-to-face workshops, which include study, networking and industry visits. Please note that you will need to pay for your own travel and accommodation and cover any other costs associated with the workshops.
Part-time study requires completing one course per term.
At the end of the programme, you will be able to prepare and present a business plan that is based on your personal business or work situation.
All necessary materials and assessments are available online. Zoom sessions are held and recorded as per student requests and agreement within the group.
