The IRD programme aligns strongly with Lincoln’s land-based vision and therefore differs from the Development Studies programmes offered elsewhere.

At the Masters level, you can enrol either for a coursework Masters or for a research Master’s degree.

The Master of International Rural Development is a coursework programme. You will complete nine postgraduate courses over 12 calendar months starting from November each year. You can choose between specialisations in agribusiness, economics, rural finance or tourism. There is no thesis requirement.

If you wish to study for a research Master’s degree there are several options to choose from.

The Master of Commerce (Agricultural) attracts students with agribusiness research interests. An academic background in science, social science or environmental management may lead to the Master of Applied Science.

If you have an interest in training and research within commerce (e.g. rural finance) you may suit the Master of Commerce and Management.

For a research Master’s degree, you will need to complete six postgraduate courses in the first year of study (three courses per semester), followed by one year of thesis research. You can select your courses in consultation with your thesis supervisor.

Postgraduates that hold a relevant research Master’s degree can apply to study for a Doctoral degree in Lincoln’s IRD programme. Postgraduate certificates (three courses) and Postgraduate diplomas (six courses) are also available.
